Everyone is at home and trying to find things to keep them busy. Home projects are on everyone’s agenda it seems as the home improvement stores are busier than ever.
We want to share some project ideas that are simple and important to your home.
1. Change Out Your Home Air Filter
It’s a good idea to change your filter out monthly which is why it’s a good idea to purchase a few and just have them handy.
Unless you have acute sensitivities to specific particulates, a filter with a “MERV” rating of 5 to 8 will be fine.
2. Clean Air Conditioning Coils
First clear away any plant growth around the condenser. First make sure your breaker is off inside then remove the cover.
Spray in the inside with a hose pipe using a downward angle until clean.
This is also a good practice in the summer to keep out bugs such as wasps. Just be careful and don’t get stung.
3. Caulk Check Up
It’s time to turn the air conditioner back on so you need to make sure everything is sealed up tight to keep that “bought air” (as us Southern folks call it) on the inside of the house.
4. Upgrade Your Thermostat
If you still have one of those old fashioned wheel-turned thermostats how about an upgrade? They look much nicer plus it can definitely help you to save energy. A digital thermostat is much easier to set. The universal suggested setting is 65 degrees in the winter and 76 degrees in the summer. Of course everyone’s comfort level is different.
5. Check Your Hot Water Heater
There are a few things to do here, first check the pressure relief valve. Then you want to check/replace the sacrificial anode, and flush the water heater.
Testing the pressure relief valve will get a bit of scalding-hot water on the floor. So wear sturdy shoes and be careful.
6. Check for Rotting Wood
We had a very wet winter this year so it’s possible you could have some rotting wood somewhere. Do a check around and if you find some this is a repair you definitely cannot delay because it can cause worse damage.
7. Do a Deck Check Up
Make sure your deck is in good shape as it is time to start spending a little more time outside.
Make sure there are no nail pops or anything else that can put the kids in danger. It’s also a good idea to add a layer of water-repellent seal to discourage weather damage.
